Okay, so I've long since been a believer in the UFL as they've done just about everything right from a business perspective. Start slow, few teams, non-NFL cities, fan involvement, free online PR and buzz and the list could go on; however, over the past week I've seen the first chink in their armor.

The UFL has officially opened their online store; at the current time however it's only UFL merchandise as none of the team merchandise has been unveiled.

In what clearly shows that the UFL has a great game plan, ticket sales will go on early next week to begin bringing in revenue months before the first game.

The UFL is making there presence felt as it now seems that former Denver Broncos and Houston Texans fullback, Cecil Sapp will be the next player to leave the NFL for the United Football League.

This announcement comes from his agent, David Canter's, twitter account.

A 6 year NFL veteran, the 30 year old Sapp will be utilized in both the running back and fullback positions for the New York franchise.

In what is clearly the first sign that the UFL intends to be a true contender with the NFL; former NFL Quarterback, and 2004 first-round draft pick from Tulane, JP Losman has signed with the United Football League Las Vegas Team.

"The United Football League is providing me with the opportunity to play the sport I love at a high level and for that, I am extremely grateful," said Losman. "I am excited to get back out onto the field and represent Las Vegas during the league's first season."

The Bleacher Report put out a great post that I found very interesting; I really like the part about fan involvement, heck that's how it's grown this far.

As football fans out there know, there is an upstart football league about to begin its inaugural season this fall. The UFL will play their games on Friday nights, broadcast them on Versus, and provide no real competition to the NFL in any way, which is most definitely a good thing.

The NFL recently announced that they had to lay off some 1100 workers do to the tougher economic times; clearly thats a sign that an alternative lower cost league could work. If you can't afford stupid NFL ticket prices, then enjoy a high quality UFL game at the rate of an NBA or MLB game.

Obviously the other good news from that is that there is plenty of talent available for the United Football League to choose from; hopefully they continue to make carefully thought out decisions.

So digging through the Michael Vick article over at SI.com I came across an intersting point that hasn't been given much attention. According to comments the UFL commisioner made there are currently 6 cities for the new league; Huyghue is quoted saying there will be "six teams: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford." I have to admit that as a Texas guy that's not fun to hear, but as a football guy it's nice to see that they're moving forward.

I posted about a year ago the possibility of Michael Vick playing in the United Football League and coming back into the limelight as a star UFL quarterback.. According to stories out of Sports Illustrated, commissioner Michael Huyghue has been quoted as saying there's an almost 100% chance that he'll be playing in the UFL.

I was thinking today about the business aspect of a new football league, and I couldn't help but wonder what I'd do.

First, think about it from the business perspective, if you've been at one company for 2 or 3 years and haven't really gotten a promotion or raise outside of the minimum, wouldn't the idea of a raise sound pretty inviting? I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that I'd at least think long and hard about making the move.

UFLAccess.com has confirmed through a source close to the league that former NFL assistant director of football development, Ed Reynolds will be in charge of the Security and Administration for the United Football League. He has a long football history serving in several positions including that of former player for both the New England Patriots and the New York Giants during his career from 1983 through 1992. This addition gives the UFL another National Football League executive that can help to increase the leagues chances for success.

So I noticed a huge spike in traffic today from the standard 50-60 visitors to about 400; curious I did a little searching and found that the second UFL website now has a newsletter signup. I went ahead and signed up for the newsletter thinking right away I'd get some great news or updates, but no. I did get an auto responder that I've quoted below.

08.10.08

Okay so since we're not The Official United Football League Website, just a really good fan based community, I thought it was interesting that The UFL came out with a "second" official website because lets face it UFL2008 doesn't go over so well in 2009, 2010 and so on.

So with 2008 clearly not an option, I think it's apparent that the need for a few more investors is needed. Rumors still circle around soccer team owners looking to expand their assets, but until we've got a full 8 owners with realistically about 100 million to burn I don't think we'll see draft day anytime soon.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The United Football League (UFL), a new professional outdoor fall football league scheduled to debut in August 2008, is inviting fans to help determine which markets will host teams for the league’s inaugural season through an innovative program with TicketRESERVE.

I've been thinking pretty hard about it lately and if the UFL wants to compete with the NFL then they'll have to get rid of the things that really bog down the NFL.

Speed Up the Game - A major problem with the National Football League is that fact that every game is going to take at least 3 hours of your time. I love the game just as much as the next guy, but I'd love to have that same intensity and emotion compressed into 2 hours or less.

With the flurry of news surrounding Mark Cuban at the announcement that he has verbally committed to purchasing a UFL team, he felt like he should offer some insight as to exactly why he made that decision. Clearly the failure of previous leagues is fresh on everyone's mind with the one-and-done season of the XFL in 2001, but Mark is not Vince McMahon and where Vince played on the XFL's "Entertainment" factor the United Football League will be a better structured business.
