Okay, so I've long since been a believer in the UFL as they've done just about everything right from a business perspective. Start slow, few teams, non-NFL cities, fan involvement, free online PR and buzz and the list could go on; however, over the past week I've seen the first chink in their armor.

The UFL is making there presence felt as it now seems that former Denver Broncos and Houston Texans fullback, Cecil Sapp will be the next player to leave the NFL for the United Football League.

This announcement comes from his agent, David Canter's, twitter account.

A 6 year NFL veteran, the 30 year old Sapp will be utilized in both the running back and fullback positions for the New York franchise.

In what is clearly the first sign that the UFL intends to be a true contender with the NFL; former NFL Quarterback, and 2004 first-round draft pick from Tulane, JP Losman has signed with the United Football League Las Vegas Team.

"The United Football League is providing me with the opportunity to play the sport I love at a high level and for that, I am extremely grateful," said Losman. "I am excited to get back out onto the field and represent Las Vegas during the league's first season."

The Bleacher Report put out a great post that I found very interesting; I really like the part about fan involvement, heck that's how it's grown this far.

As football fans out there know, there is an upstart football league about to begin its inaugural season this fall. The UFL will play their games on Friday nights, broadcast them on Versus, and provide no real competition to the NFL in any way, which is most definitely a good thing.

Starting a new football league; sounds ludicrous considering the numerous failures of other leagues of the past but that’s just what Bill Hambrecht intends to do.

The NFL recently announced that they had to lay off some 1100 workers do to the tougher economic times; clearly thats a sign that an alternative lower cost league could work. If you can't afford stupid NFL ticket prices, then enjoy a high quality UFL game at the rate of an NBA or MLB game.

Obviously the other good news from that is that there is plenty of talent available for the United Football League to choose from; hopefully they continue to make carefully thought out decisions.

The United Football League looks to still be moving forward even with the continually economic downturn. I think the down turn only strengthens the efforts of the league as it gives fans an alternative to extremely overpriced NFL tickets that simply feed the egos of players and owners. While I probably won't get to see a game for a few years as the point for me would be to see professional football without extreme expense, I'd have to travel out of town, possibly out of state and that just cuts into the budget.

So digging through the Michael Vick article over at SI.com I came across an intersting point that hasn't been given much attention. According to comments the UFL commisioner made there are currently 6 cities for the new league; Huyghue is quoted saying there will be "six teams: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford." I have to admit that as a Texas guy that's not fun to hear, but as a football guy it's nice to see that they're moving forward.

So it's a long shot, but Michael David Smith from AOL started an interesting discussion. If Michael Vick were to be convicted of dog fighting and banned from the NFL, could he be the showpiece for The United Football League? It's an interesting discussion that Michael started in response to Peter King's comments over at SI.com.

I was thinking today about the business aspect of a new football league, and I couldn't help but wonder what I'd do.

First, think about it from the business perspective, if you've been at one company for 2 or 3 years and haven't really gotten a promotion or raise outside of the minimum, wouldn't the idea of a raise sound pretty inviting? I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that I'd at least think long and hard about making the move.

UFLAccess.com has confirmed through a source close to the league that former NFL assistant director of football development, Ed Reynolds will be in charge of the Security and Administration for the United Football League. He has a long football history serving in several positions including that of former player for both the New England Patriots and the New York Giants during his career from 1983 through 1992. This addition gives the UFL another National Football League executive that can help to increase the leagues chances for success.

It's hard to believe that college football starts today, year after year it seems to take longer for the season to start back up. Being a fan of just about any type of football I'm really excited about the Alabama Clemson game in Atlanta today. I don't really think that it has National Title implications, but I do think it's going to be fun to watch. Usually those types of games are save for rivalry week, but I don't think these guys have played each other in something like 30 years.

So previously I wrote this would not be a minor league NFL, but lets be honest wouldn't that option do well? Instead of having talented players ride the bench while they learn a new system you could actually put them into game situations; this would allow them to further develop their skill set and get a better understanding of the plays.

Have you ever quit one job to go and work for another company? Why did you leave the first company; more money, a promotion, or an expanded role?

I can't get enough; football, football, football and if I didn't mention it I need just one more night of football. Saturday is college game day, Sunday is NFL game day, we've got Monday Night Football and now the NFL Network has their Re-Play on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. My two boys are years away from High School and I grew up in Houston so I don't have a strong tie to any of the area schools.

In an effort to solidify their intentions, the United Football League has hired former NFL executive and player agent Michael Huyghue as their new commissioner. Still slated to begin play in August of 2008, Huyghue was hired based upon his 20 year tenure working as an attorney with the NFL's management. During his time there he worked with both the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars as well as a player rep for the Carolina Panthers first-round draft choice Jon Beason as well as more recently suspended cornerback Pacman Jones from the Tennessee Titans.

I've been thinking pretty hard about it lately and if the UFL wants to compete with the NFL then they'll have to get rid of the things that really bog down the NFL.

Speed Up the Game - A major problem with the National Football League is that fact that every game is going to take at least 3 hours of your time. I love the game just as much as the next guy, but I'd love to have that same intensity and emotion compressed into 2 hours or less.

After 17 years of existence, the NFL Europe has officially been shut down. While they had a good run and produced about 3 real talents that eventually made their way to the NFL, it didn't really do much to help expand the game globally. Used as a farm league of sorts for the NFL they have suffered from financial woes for years costing the NFL between 400-500 million per year to operate.

06.24.07

Some friends and I were discussing how all major sports have a farm, minor or development league system that they utilize to groom and refine talent. Major League Baseball has their farm league of A, AA, and AAA teams that they utilize to hone the skills of some of the more raw talent players. The National Basketball Association has recently began their D-League or Development Leage to instill work ethic and retain a strong group of backup players should one of their roster players get injured.

06.12.07

The NFL has rules that specifically do not allow football players from turning professional until they have been out of high school a minimum of 3 years, that's a clause that could put the United Football League at a big advantage. Instead of going after players that have several years of college experience, they can go after younger players with a great deal of upside at a lower cost. As well, they can begin molding the players to their processes and systems much sooner than if they were introduced after 3 or 4 years of college.

With the flurry of news surrounding Mark Cuban at the announcement that he has verbally committed to purchasing a UFL team, he felt like he should offer some insight as to exactly why he made that decision. Clearly the failure of previous leagues is fresh on everyone's mind with the one-and-done season of the XFL in 2001, but Mark is not Vince McMahon and where Vince played on the XFL's "Entertainment" factor the United Football League will be a better structured business.
