Okay, so I've long since been a believer in the UFL as they've done just about everything right from a business perspective. Start slow, few teams, non-NFL cities, fan involvement, free online PR and buzz and the list could go on; however, over the past week I've seen the first chink in their armor.
Uniforms!
Let's be honest, what they're trying to do is brand the league and not the teams with the hopes that fans will support the "league." The colors are all just a mash up of the logo colors (so it's branded) and instead of logos, everyone sports the UFL logo? Wait, what? Is this my son's pee-wee league where all the uniforms are the same save a color change? I see how this could be a way to save costs, but how is anyone going to know who is who out there (no player names) and even the colors are so close that team a could wear team b's uniforms and no one would be the wiser.
Apart from the apparent confusion, how are they going to garner some more fan tie-in, like the really need to do, if I can't get behind and support my team. Supporting a team is a crucial step in becoming a fan, so why not give me a team I can start to identify with...not a league.

i really hope Raleigh is
i really hope Raleigh is successful in obtaining a team. We have the fan base to support it, it was proven with the Raleigh Rebels(arena). It didn't last because the owner had debt on three previous teams. He was forced to fold his team and pay back the debt he owed.

Partnerships
Someone should have contacted Vince McMahon (the XFL rights owner) to try to revive some of the XFL lineup, as well as partnering with some of the NFL owners. I'm sure a deal could have been hashed out to set the new league up as a farm league for the NFL.
With the outrageous contracts that are shelled out by owners for untested rookies, the new "farm" league would serve as a "proving" and "conditioning" ground for young players as the AHL is used in conjunction to the NHL. I could see it as a feasible and lucrative venture for team owners in the NFL in driving competition in players, rather than large salaries for the Ryan Leaf's, and JeMarcus Russell's of the NFL. With support from the NFL and partnerships and, of course, better scheduling (perhaps in the off season, such as the XFL) there would be time for major market airplay.
I use the XFL for an example because many of the rules made the league (game play) a medium between the rules used in college as to those used by the NFL. Besides, some of the uniqueness was the elimination of the coin toss for the "mano-a-Mano" two opposing players scrambling for the ball to start the game. Another quality was the college overtime style of play, with each team getting a crack at the goalline, yet having to match the number of downs or face losing. An added bonus was the "open season on quarterback" as it harkened back to the "old days" when quarterbacks didn't wear skirts (and yes there were penalties to protect the quarterback, just not the "touch football" rules used today in the NFL).
As a football fan, I say give me more "Football." But also as a fan, I want quality. I want the game that "American Football" represents not a carbon copy or even a complete revision of the playbook. It has to "live up" to a standard, be relevant, and be attractive enough to retain the attention of more than a couple of communities. One major aspect that should never be overlooked is scheduling. In the "Football loving" communities, the days of the week are very important to the families of the young school football athletes to the adults that watch and play. Thursdays are for the Junior Varsity, Friday is for the Varsity, Saturday is college day, and Sunday is for the NFL professionals. To think that this league solves this problem by scheduling Wednesdays is still absurd, because anybody that has played football should know that Wednesday is a critical day to prepare for the Thursday through Sunday run for all of "American Football" respectively. XFL at least brought "American Football" to the off season and gave a lot of the players that didn't make it to the NFL an additional chance to impress the NFL owners to "take another look" at a player that would have been otherwise overlooked.
I say, if you’re going to do it, do it right. Football means a lot to a lot of people.
Non NFL cities????
Is San Francisco a "non-NFL" city? It's true the play of the Raiders and Niners has been suspect in recent years....
Bad Uniforms, Stadiums and Cities Even Worse!!!!!
O.K. the uniform colors do not ork well. But Who in the world is going to see a game at ATT Park, or Citi field????? This idea is soooo bad they cannot even find football stadium that are available on a Wednesday Night!!! Not a good sign for the league to survive THIS season, let alone for two or more seasons!!!!
Does anyone care about the team names, or the cities that are playing??? Not in Birmingham yet where people could watch football, not in Memphis where the USFL was successful???
The XFL was in Vegas, and how well did that do????
It seems like it is a "Led Zeppelin" with the league UNABLE to at least START with 8 teams its first year, not a great sign, and what about Armstrong from "Google"??? He must have dropped out already. If the Arena League cannot survive right now,,,,how well will this league do???
UFL LINEUP OF TEAMS
EXCEPT FOR NEW YORK AND CHICAGO (I live in Chicago) the UFL SHOULD PUT TEAMS
IN NON-NFL CITIES ONLY. EXPANSION SHOULD BE SLOW AND CAUTIOUS WHILE WAITING FOR THE U.S. ECONOMY TO RIGHT ITSELF. EVENTUALLY A 12-TEAM LEAGUE WITH USA
TEAMS ONLY (EUROPEAN TEAMS WILL HAVE TO WAIT). AVOID FRIDAY NIGHTS TO GET
OUT OF THE WAY OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. NIGHT GAMES ON TV TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, AND THURSDAYS (as an alternative to crummy TV shows). THE LINEUP
OF TEAMS AS FOLLOWS:
EAST CENTRAL WEST
New York Sentinels Chicago Gladiators Los Angeles Lazers
Hartford Whales Memphis Marauders Portland Lumberjacks
Florida Tuskers (Orlando) San Antonio Stallions Utah Ultrasonics
Rochester Rustlers Birmingham Ironmen Las Vegas Locomotives
Not THAT bad...
I agree that the sameness of the design for all four teams hurts - badly - but some of the color combinations don't look all that terrible. The Sentinels, for instance. My only major beef is because of the colors they chose, sometimes the on-field graphics for TV will show up on a player's back or legs, wherever there's a sizable patch of green. Nothing quite like seeing a blue scrimmage line run right through a linesman's back to give an upstart sports venture a bit of a bush-league feel.
On the plus side, at least teams will get much more distinctive uniforms and color schemes come next year. And if the two games I've seen thus far are any indication, the quality of play on the field - miles ahead of what the XFL, World League, and WFL could offer in their short lives, and already almost as good as the USFL at its peak - will soon make people forget about the chintzy "generic" unis.
Now if only they would spread the word a bit more... marketing and public visibility, thus far, is the UFL's biggest weak point. They have a fine product so far, but it's all for naught if nobody knows it's there.
don't worry about the uniforms
Judging by last night's attendance, you won't have to worry about uniforms for 2010. Who ever thought this league up is a moron/s.
Re: don't worry about the uniforms
Haven't watched a game. Don't have Versus. Not going to get it, but curious to see how this league pans out.
Not sure I agree the owners are complete morons (after all, they somehow came up with the money to invest), but agree with you that the league probably won't last very long.
I think the owners are over-estimating the hunger for pro football played by NFL cast-offs. Why would I want to watch a bunch of players that aren't quite good enough for the NFL play NFL rules ball? If I want to watch NFL rules football in the fall, I'll watch NFL games played by the best - on major broadcast channels at that. At least the cast-offs that go to the CFL play by different rules making it a different game. Now NFL rules spring ball by "some-good-but-none-great" players, I might go for...
Sorry, Thomas...those names
Sorry, Thomas...those names are lame. STARS sounds like a gay bar. WRANGLERS just reminds me of those too-tight pants the cowboys wear. GLORY reminds me of underground 'glory holes'. AZTECS: already used by San Diego State. ACES ?? please. SHARKS : maybe. EMPERORS : Too hard to say when you're drunk at a sports bar.
JACKSON,MISSISSIPPI.
WHAT ABOUT THE JACKSON JAY BIRDS? ANY TAKERS? HANK GUPTON, ANAHUAC,TEXAS.
The Uniforms are another Smart Move
I previously wrote that this was the first mistake the UFL made, but then I read this reply from the Commissioner and it actually made more sense; plus I mentioned the cost savings in my post before.
Let me start by saying how excited I am for the upcoming UFL season! However, I have one concern: the uniforms of the four franchises. Why are they all of the same template and use the colors of the UFL? Couldn't this have been a chance to set the UFL apart from other leagues that use outlandish styles (like the Arena League and WFL)? Could the franchises change uniforms after this season?
Commissioner Huyghue:
The “Premiere” season uniforms were well -conceived and custom designed and will be used for the first season only. The inspiration for the uniforms comes from the UFL logo and its Foundation colors. While we could have picked random colors, we chose to create a unified branded system which ultimately allowed for manufacturing efficiencies while allowing each team to be unique. The colors also tie in nicely with the communities. For example, the Locomotives’ uniforms are silver, blue and white. Nevada is known as the silver state so there was logic behind all of our choices.
Thamos Roy WPG BB
I think they're horrible!
And the Tuskers is an awful name.
It should be...
Orlando Sharks (sounds good, name of an old indoor soccer team in Orlando but who cares no one knows about that team anyways, same colours they all ready have, blue, light, blue a bit of black and white)
New York Emperors (sounds cheesy but... Empire State, Empire State Building... it would work, the colours should be dark blue and yellow)
California Redwoods (sounds good, represents the area and is called California to represent all of the Bay Area, colours should be Dark Green and red like the tree)
Las Vegas Aces (sounds good and makes sense to the area, i know the UFL wanted to stay away from a gambling name but locomotives sounds lame. colours for the Aces would be Black, White, Sandy Yellow)
2010 Expansion...
LA Stars (sounds cheesy but represents the area, colours Yellow and Black)
Hartford (should be called New England to attract fans from other areas in the Northeast, colours should be red and white with a bit of blue)
2011 Expansion (i hope)...
Mexico City Aztecs (sounds good, represents the area, colours would be red, normal green and white like the Mexican flag)
San Antonio Wranglers (sounds good for a Texas team, colours should be Dark and Light Grey and red)
Raleigh (big city and good sports town, even supports hockey well)
Columbus Glory(would play at Crew Field [soccer specific stadium but a good size] colours should be Blue and white with a bit of red, named after the USFL team the Ohio Glory)
Ohio Glory
Just a minor correction on Thamos Roy's post: The Ohio Glory played in the World League (the one that eventually became NFL Europa), not the USFL.
